  • Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute
    Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute
    Established in 1976, ETRI is a non-profit government-funded research with major achievements in telecommunications technology, information systems and graphic design. Among ETRI´s critical contributions in communications are CDMA (code division multiple access), WiBro (wireless broadband internet technology) and DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) telecommunications. Other technologies developed include TDX-Exchange, High Density Semiconductor Microchips, Mini-Super Computers (TiCOM) and advanced multimedia editing systems. The ETRI Journal is a critical source for research and ETRI has over 20,000 patents pending today. With an average of 921 patents and 1000 SCI papers in the last ten years, ETRI is a major research institute. It is also a major source for spin-off venture companies such as Havit Information Co. and Handysoft.

    Korea Aerospace Research Institute
    The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), established in 1989, has been the center for advanced work on airplanes, drones, gliders, satellites and satellite systems, space launch systems and qualified certification for air and aerospace. The aircraft development project includes the Smart Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) program and the Korean helicopter program. KARI is also involved in the development of Korea Multi Purpose Satellite (“KOMPSAT&") 3, KOMPSAT 5 equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (“SAR&") and the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite “COMS&").

    KIT offers services for toxicology to laboratories and other research institutes. Since acquiring the first GLP (good lab practice) certification given by the Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare in 1988, KIT´s GLP system has been certified by the Korean Ministry of Environment (1998) and the Korean Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (2002). KIT´s GLP system has also received an excellent evaluation from the Japanese government and the OECD.

    National Fusion Research Institute
    With the launch of the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) project in 1995, Korea has become deeply involved in fusion research. NFRC (National Fusion Research Institute) is the center for those efforts. In cooperation with other nations, Korea is participating in the development of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor demonstrate scientifically fusion using deuterium-tritium plasma). NFRC has developed the KSTAR, at present in the process of manufacturing and assembly of its facilities. The KSTAR device went online in June, 2008, and has produced plasma.

    The National Institute for Mathematical Science (NIMS) undertakes research in three fields: foundational mathematics, interdisciplinary mathematics and industrial mathematics. The division of foundational mathematics develops pure mathematics and promotes the study of mathematics and publication of mathematical science. The division of interdisciplinary mathematics focuses on mathematics in that it is combined with other disciplines such as physics, life sciences or economics, and promotes cooperation between academic institutions. The division of industrial mathematics concentrates on the industrial application of mathematics in fields like IT and communications and finance, and codes.
